This Beef on Track notes the importance of unifying and standardising the criteria and guidelines that the TAC and Public Commitment signatories must abide by.
The publication shows advances made by Voluntary Monitoring Protocol for Cattle Suppliers in the Cerrado, the current scenario when it comes to overlapping of private areas into public area e what actions need to be taken to implement an effective sectorial agreement and to promote a responsible cattle ranching chain.
This book creates a time line of the commitments adopted by the cattle-ranching chain since the end of the 2010s showing what has advanced since then and the challenges overcome so that real results, i.e., the effective and permanent reduction of deforestation in the Amazon, can become a reality.
The publication provides a detailed step-by-step so that retail companies can develop purchasing policies with clear criteria that prevent the purchase of beef from illegally deforested areas in the Amazon, that use slave labor or that have other environmental and social irregularities.
This publication shows that the certifications available for the leather industry in Brazil include traceability as an important requirement within their scope, although it is not mandatory, and that even if the foreign market is showing more maturity in this sense, there are signs from local companies that this topic is gaining in importance. For such, the availability and transparency of information throughout the production chain needs to be extended.
Researchers from the Luiz de Queiroz Land Studies Foundation (Fealq) of São Paulo University (USP), the Centre for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) of USP and Imaflora have released an analysis for the establishment of a beef cattle productivity index, based on a maximum productivity index of a beef cattle ranch, as a way to monitor and suppress the laundering of cattle. The audits of the commitment of the Term of Adjustment for Beef will be key to proving the effectiveness of the index application and any possible calibration method that may be needed.
The Cerrado biome has gained increasing visibility and importance in the public commitments of the beef supply chain. This study shows that most of the companies and non-governmental initiatives in this analysis have agreed not to convert the biome, however, there is a lack of alignment in the criteria and parameters used.
Building from the experience of Imaflora working with the 3 largest meatpackers and the 3 largest retailers in Brazil in the harmonization of the Amazon Protocol, Proforest and Imaflora have partnered together to develop a voluntary monitoring protocol for cattle suppliers in the Cerrado, with a similar objective of facilitating the implementation of best practices for monitoring direct cattle suppliers in the biome. Document describes and analyses three certification programs applicable to leather: Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certification Program (CSCB), Leather Working Group (LWG), and Istituto di Certificazione della Qualità per l'Area Pelle (LWG, the Italian Quality Certification Institute for the Leather Sector). Beef on Track, December 2020.
