This publication shows that the certifications available for the leather industry in Brazil include traceability as an important requirement within their scope, although it is not mandatory, and that even if the foreign market is showing more maturity in this sense, there are signs from local companies that this topic is gaining in importance. Researchers from the Luiz de Queiroz Land Studies Foundation (Fealq) of São Paulo University (USP), the Centre for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) of USP and Imaflora have released an analysis for the establishment of a beef cattle productivity index, based on a maximum productivity index of a beef cattle ranch, as a way to monitor and suppress the laundering of cattle. The audits of the commitment of the Term of Adjustment for Beef will be key to proving the effectiveness of the index application and any possible calibration method that may be needed.

The Cerrado biome has gained increasing visibility and importance in the public commitments of the beef supply chain. This study shows that most of the companies and non-governmental initiatives in this analysis have agreed not to convert the biome, however, there is a lack of alignment in the criteria and parameters used.

Building from the experience of Imaflora working with the 3 largest meatpackers and the 3 largest retailers in Brazil in the harmonization of the Amazon Protocol, Proforest and Imaflora have partnered together to develop a voluntary monitoring protocol for cattle suppliers in the Cerrado, with a similar objective of facilitating the implementation of best practices for monitoring direct cattle suppliers in the biome.
